$23K raised for Kalamazoo shooting victims’ families through silent auction, donations

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A “We Are Kalamazoo” benefit hockey game held by a the Kalamazoo Wings raised just over $23,000 to help families of the victims from the mass shooting in the city that happened in late February.

According to a statement from the Kalamazoo Wings, the Help Now! Fund raised the money hrough a silent auction, donations from ticket sales, and concessions sales.

The Help Now! Fund is an effort between the Battle Creek Community Foundation, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, and the United Way of Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region.

The Wings donated $2 from every ticket sold for the game. Memorabilia, goods, and services from local organizations and sports teams were used for the silent auction.

Six of the eight people who were shot died during the shooting rampage on February 20.

The two other victims, Abigail Kopf and Tiana Carruthers, continue to improve while recovering in the hospital.

The Kalamazoo Wings won the game in overtime against the Utah Grizzlies, 5-4.

The Wings take on the Grizzlies again Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Wings Event Center.
